Miller TECHNIKA Architecture + Planning

EXPERIENCE AND PERSPECTIVE

After graduating from Cornell University, Miller TECHNIKA's founder and Principal, John Miller gained unusually broad experience as a construction contractor, healthcare architect, corporate relocation planner, mediator, and executive.

Hands-on field experience gave him a firm command of the technical skills that are needed to complete an attractive and cost-effective new facility. In the privileged position of a lawsuit mediator, he gained a vivid understanding of the differing perspectives and objectives of owners, designers, and construction professionals, and as senior operating manager, opening branch offices nationwide, he learned the client's perspective on the design profession, firsthand.

Client Focus / Information Management

At Miller TECHNIKA, every aspect of project design and professional service is judged by its tangible contribution to the client's business success. Since 1988 Miller TECHNIKA has used computer technology to offer businesses and institutions a 'no excuses' alternative. Computer-aided design, scheduling, and budgeting guide the multitude of specialists involved in facilities projects. We use superior information to maximize facility value --- from initial feasibility analysis to occupancy and life-cycle operation.

Solid Experience

As of 1996, our projects have included planning, development, and design for over 1.3 million SF of projects, with an aggregate value of $50 million:

Medical office buildings 446,000 SF
Medical interiors 386,000 SF
Diagnostic imaging, MRI, and ambulatory surgery space 46,000 SF
Administrative interiors 34,000 SF
Associated parking structures 432,000 SF

Principal's Prior Professional Experience

Before starting the firm, John Miller worked both as a construction contractor and as a registered architect and senior manager with major design firms, completing over 1 million SF of construction. He designed the world's first clinical MRI facility and built the first hospital in California under the rigorous seismic safety standards developed after the 1971 San Fernando earthquake. Serving as its COO and VP Planning, he also was one of the founders of American Intermediation Service, helping to establish it as the first successful nationwide provider of lawsuit mediation services.

Personal Commitment

Patients still expect their physician to see them personally when they are sick. Any business person expects to have the full personal attention of their lawyer or accountant when they need advice. Yet architects will commonly pass major, multi-million dollar projects off to underlings after the first few meetings.

The unavoidable result when principals are not direct participants in design, is error and misunderstandings that lead to delay and additional cost. At Miller TECHNIKA, we believe in personal, professional relationships --- and personal, professional performance. At one time we produced our work like other firms, and we had built up to a staff of 30, but we have now turned away from the "big staff" project model. Architecture is based on information, and any miscommunication during design may cause jobsite frustrations.

We have discovered that we can be more effective with a virtual organization that uses technology to boost the productivity of the most highly skilled person available, instead of trying to staff projects at the lowest possible hourly rate, with a long, vulnerable chain of command.

As Principal of Miller TECHNIKA, John Miller is dedicated to using his technical skills and broad perspective to directly and personally guide every project... and when possible he will use our highly developed computer systems to produce the work directly, without unnecessary staff involvement. We have refined our design software and our productions systems to such efficiency that this approach is entirely feasible on projects up to about $6 million construction value. Beyond that level experienced senior professionals using the same technology are added as needed.

Miller TECHNIKA is committed to your success, and we are determined to earn your enthusiastic recommendation and support.
